Optimum sod is homegrown right here in Colorado
DENVER, CO - Sod from just anywhere won’t thrive like homegrown, according to Marjorie and Tony Nickerson, owners of A Better Landscape and Sprinkler Company in Denver, Colorado. They use Colorado-grown sod specially developed to withstand the extreme conditions of hot and cold in the high plains environment that is literally one mile high or 5280 feet above sea level.
“After sod has been planted, it must be watered twice a day, every day for a minimum of two to three weeks,” says Nickerson who recommends sod over seed in this climate. Freshly laid sod is adaptable in that it can tolerate light traffic as soon as three weeks after installation. But it’s not yielding when it comes to watering, says Nickerson. Fresh sod must be watered twice daily without exception or risk some sod dying.
Nickerson has been in the landscaping business for decades and over that time has installed enough sod to fill a stadium many, many times over, at least up to the fourth tier of seating. His clients include single-family residential and multi-unit complexes, retail clients and business office parts. His company installs sprinkler systems, sod, landscaping including flowers and performs weekly and season maintenance.
Early spring is the optimum time to install sod, says landscape contractor Nickerson. But that’s not always possible. Next best is fall when the heat of the summer has passed. Sod laid in spring has time to develop a root system over the summer months. No matter when your sod is installed, it takes a bruising in the process of cutting, transporting and installing it from sod farm to your yard, says Nickerson. “That’s a lot of shaking for any plant, even sod.”
Plants, including grasses, go dormant for the winter.
